FAQs

What is snagging?

Snagging is the process of inspecting a construction project and identifying issues, which are known as snags. Snags can include poor workmanship, the use of the wrong material or incomplete work. In some cases, snagging surveys can also find bigger issues that might breach building regulations. All snags should be added to a snagging list. Depending on the particular contract, the developer or contractor is then responsible for repairing snags.

What are the most common snags?

The most common snags are caused by low quality or rushed workmanship. These issues include chipped or messy paintwork, missing grout or small elements that haven’t been installed properly. For instance, a socket might not be properly secured to the wall or a pipe could leak once you start to use it regularly. Occasionally you might find more serious problems, but most snags are small and easy to repair.

What does a snagging list include?

A snagging list is where you collect all the different snags that need repairing. The easiest way to compile one is to log each snag digitally, with photographs and any extra notes and then tag it to a building plan. Once you’ve completed your snagging survey, you can then run a report that includes all the snags you’ve created and share it with the contractor for them to repair.

Are snagging surveys worth it?

Many new homeowners will be keen to complete a snagging survey before exchanging or moving in, especially if the property is a new build. A site inspection, including snagging, is also part of a standard handover process. Contractors and developers can get ahead of the curve by snagging using a snagging app during construction and fixing issues as they go. That way, by the time the new owner is handed the keys, there should only be tiny repairs left which won’t take much time or cost a great deal to fix.
